Podcast List

Top 9 Podcast ListI began listening to Podcasts last year and they have made a huge difference in how I keep up with the latest news and business trends. I find that I have less and less time to read books or articles about business and marketing. Podcasts fill this void and allow me to gather information from a variety of sources.

First things first, it is important to find a podcast program option that is right for you. My personal favorite is the Downcast app for the iPhone. My favorite feature of this app is the ability to speed up the podcast speed. You can go up to 3x the actual speed of the podcast. I find that most people talk at such a speed that listening to the podcast 3x the actual speed is possible. This makes it easy to fly through different podcasts. With Downcast, you simply add podcasts and then refresh your list to obtain the most recent episodes for that podcast. These can be audio or video podcasts. Apple has also released its own podcast app. Downcast costs $1.99 and the Apple podcast player is free.

Here is a list of my favorite podcasts that deal with technology, business, and marketing:

Marketing Smarts from MarketingProfs

This weekly podcast comes in around 30 minutes each week and includes great interviews with some of the top marketing minds from around the world.

Six Pixels of Separation

Mitch Joel, author of the book Six Pixels of Separation, provides interesting marketing insights by interviewing some of the top marketing and business minds around the world. This is a weekly podcast that lasts between 45 – 60 minutes.

TWiT – This Week in Tech

This is one of my favorite podcasts and focuses on all things technology. TWiT is hosted by Leo Laporte and has a rotating team. This podcast is produced live each Sunday and usually runs around 2 hours. This podcast keeps me up to date on new technology releases from Apple, Samsung, etc. while also keeping me updated on changes to Google search and website development solutions. The show is very entertaining and the hosts are funny. This podcast is a must for anyone in the technology field.

NPR Topics: Technology Podcast

This podcast is a weekly compilation of the top tech news stories. It usually lasts around 25 minutes and is a good overview of interesting technology stories.

Wall Street Journal on Small Business

If you are a small business owner, this is a great weekly podcast that covers relevant news dealing with technology, real estate, and small business practices. This one is short at just 10-12 minutes per week.

Duct Tape Marketing

Another great podcast that includes interviews form business leaders and marketers from around the world. This one is hosted by John Jantsch, author of the book Duct Tape Marketing.

Freakonomics Radio

This podcast just had its 100th episode. I like this podcast because it challenges you to think about marketing and business in unique ways. Hosts Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner cover interesting stories of marketing prowess.

TEDTalks Business

This podcast is fairly sporadic in its release. It does not follow a weekly or even monthly calendar like most of the other podcasts listed on this page, but it does include interesting business stories from around the world. These podcasts are pretty short at around 10 minutes per episode.

This is Your Life (Michael Hyatt)

A friend turned me on to this podcast. It is hosted by Michael Hyatt and covers topics of leadership, business, and personal development. I find a lot of the topics relevant to small business owners and those interested in using blogs or publishing to spread the word about their business.

  • […] these potential connection points. By the way, I found out about this book through one of the podcasts I listen to – Marketing Smarts from Marketing Profs. […]

  • Erik,
I’m so glad to hear how much you enjoy podcasts – I’m even more happy to hear that’s where you found my book. 🙂
I just wrote about a podcast worth checking out – it’s called The Unconventionals. I just wrote about it this week…

It’s a great example of a brandscape and it’s a really good podcast. I think it’s one to add to your list after a few listens.
    Happy listening.

  • Erik,
I do… I have at least one more… I’ll keep thinking about them… but I think every marketer should listen to On The Media (an NPR program). It’s not about marketing per se, but I learn a ton about the media each and every week from their awesome show!
It’s good to get some perspective on the news media, the publishing business and the ins-and-outs of the media world at-large.
Let me know what you think!
